New Scholars’ Leadership Camp - A Glimpse

Thank you everyone that made the New Scholars’ leadership training a great success this December, 2009, especially Lyndsay Holley & Nick Handler who so graciously opened their house to us for three weeks and Silvia Battilana & Jesse Czelusta who helped us with training sessions.

Below is a taste, with more to follow in the coming weeks:

Just came across this video of William Kamkwamba and needed to share, for William is a perfect example of the initiative that New Scholars aims to support. Take a look:

God Grew Tired of Us & Bentley School Events

Thanks to all our friends and supporters who came to New Scholars’ screening of “God Grew Tired of Us” on Thursday September 24th. Our appreciation also goes to those who could not come but were there in spirit. When Darius and I sat on the following day to do the math, we found we had raised nearly $ 1500. We are grateful for all your support! But we still have some more work to do so keep the balls rolling.

Also, on September 25th, Darius and I had another wonderful opportunity to speak at Bentley School on a panel with Craig Walzer, the editor of Out of Exile. We spoke to both student and parent groups, and their collective support for New Scholars’ work is quite incredible. For those who do not know, the Bentley School has been with New Scholars from the latter’s infancy. And, for almost a year now, Darius and I have watched, and continue to be amazed by, the power of the Bentley School’s youths—a great illustration that the Sudanese refugee youth leaders in Kenya do have the potential to positively impact their communities if given the tools and resources they need to be successful. So, let’s all make that our goal!

Our passion is to mobilize those in our community infected with HIV/AIDS to partake in a campaign aimed at educating the community about this disease. Together we will put a face to the epidemic by using theatrical activities and radio programs to deliver the message.

We acquired our knowledge about this epidemic by watching members in our community weaken or die from this terrible disease. (more…)
